Charlotte, TN — After more than three decades in county government, longtime Dickson County Commissioner Carl Buckner indicated at a recent meeting that his time in public office is coming to an end.
During the closing announcements portion of the Dickson County Commission meeting on Monday April 20th, 2026, Buckner was recognized by fellow commissioners for his recent birthday before briefly reflecting on his years of service to the county.
“I appreciate all of you,” Buckner told the commission. “It’s been a long ride. This will be my last trip around this sun over here. So, anyhow, after 31 years, it’s about time to quit.”
The remarks drew reactions from fellow commissioners and meeting attendees, with County Mayor Bob Rial acknowledging Buckner’s lengthy tenure and joking that the commission would still “make you hang out four more months.”
Buckner has been one of the longest-serving members of the Dickson County Commission, serving through decades of growth and change across the county. Over the years, the commission has overseen major issues including school expansion, infrastructure improvements, economic development, zoning debates, and rapid population growth tied to the expanding Nashville region.
Buckner chose not to run for re-election and his current term will be his last after 31 years in county government.
The moment came near the end of an otherwise business heavy meeting that included discussions on proposed restrictions for future landfills and rock quarries, school funding approvals, and county growth plan updates.
Commissioners and attendees also sang “Happy Birthday” to Buckner during the meeting following a lighthearted exchange among members of the commission.
