Buckner Park Expansion Could Add More Youth Baseball Fields
Dickson, TN — The Dickson City Council took another step forward in the renovation of J. Dan Buckner Park on Feb. 2, 2026 approving a measure that could ultimately reshape one of the park’s longest existing ballfields into three smaller youth fields.
Council members unanimously approved Resolution #2026-15 authorizing the mayor to sign Task 2 under a Master Consulting Services Agreement with CONSOR North America Inc. The agreement provides floodplain-related services for City Lake as part of Phase II of the ongoing park renovation project.
City officials said the work will cost no more than $28,000.
Why floodplain mapping matters
Before any changes can be made to the athletic fields near City Lake, the city must determine how potential construction would interact with the lake’s floodplain.
City Administrator David Travis and Public Works Director Bret Stock told the council that the approved task will produce a Letter of Map Revision (LOMR) outlining the lake’s floodplain boundaries. That information will help determine safe and permissible elevations for reconfiguring Field #1.
In practical terms, the study ensures any redesign complies with federal and state floodplain regulations — a necessary step before moving dirt or altering field layouts.
Three fields instead of one
If the floodplain analysis supports it, Field #1 could be reconfigured into three smaller ballfields.
That potential shift would have a significant impact on youth athletics in Dickson. Smaller fields are better suited for younger age groups, which often face scheduling bottlenecks during spring and summer seasons.
Expanding the number of playable surfaces could:
Increase available game slots
Reduce scheduling conflicts
Allow more youth leagues to participate
Improve tournament hosting potential
While the redesign is not yet finalized, the mapping work represents a critical step toward increasing field capacity at one of the city’s busiest recreational facilities.
Part of a broader park upgrade
The proposal is part of Phase II of improvements at Buckner Park, which has seen ongoing updates in recent years as the city invests in recreational infrastructure.
The lake, ballfields, and surrounding amenities serve as a hub for youth sports, family recreation, and community events. Officials have said that long term planning is focused on maximizing the park’s usability while staying within environmental and regulatory constraints.
What happens next?
The approved contract authorizes technical floodplain analysis. Once the Letter of Map Revision is completed and reviewed, city leaders will have clearer guidance on whether the three-field configuration is feasible and what construction would require.
If the project moves forward, Dickson families could see expanded youth playing opportunities in the coming phases of the renovation.
For parents, coaches, and players who fill Buckner Park’s fields each season, the potential addition of more youth-sized diamonds could mean shorter waitlists and more game nights under the lights.
