Win and In: Dickson County Must Beat Kenwood to Make the Playoffs

One game. One playoff spot. One last chance for the Dickson County Cougars to keep their season alive.

Despite a difficult stretch of losses, Dickson County enters its regular-season finale with a clear path to the postseason: beat Kenwood, and the Cougars are in. Lose, and their season ends.

The Cougars travel to Kenwood with both teams standing at 3-6 overall and 1-3 in Region 7-5A. The winner will finish fourth in the six-team region and claim its final playoff berth.

For Dickson County, there is no need to watch another scoreboard or wait for another team to deliver an upset. The Cougars control their own postseason fate.

Dickson County reached this position after a 22-0 loss to Northeast on Oct. 23. That result secured third place for the Eagles and left the Cougars facing a decisive showdown with the Knights.

Kenwood enters the finale following a 55-13 loss to Henry County. Like Dickson County, the Knights have one region victory, earned against Northwest.

That leaves the two teams on equal footing in the standings. Their meeting will settle the fourth-place race directly: the winner finishes 2-3 in region play, while the loser falls to 1-4.

Even a Northwest victory over Northeast would not change those stakes. Dickson County and Kenwood have both beaten the Vikings, giving each the head-to-head advantage if they finish tied with Northwest.

The Cougars’ opportunity remains intact despite four consecutive losses. Dickson County last won on Sept. 18, defeating Northwest 32-7. Since then, the Cougars have fallen to Kirkwood, Spring Hill, Lawrence County and Northeast.

Their overall record, however, does not prevent them from qualifying. A fourth-place region finish would send Dickson County into the Class 5A playoffs with a 4-6 record.

Elsewhere in Region 7-5A, Kirkwood and Henry County will meet to decide the region championship. Both enter the final week at 4-0 in region play, with Kirkwood standing at 8-1 overall and Henry County at 5-4.

Those two teams have secured the region’s top two positions and first-round home playoff games. Their finale will determine which enters the postseason as the region champion.

Northeast, now 4-5 overall and 2-2 in the region, is locked into third place. The Eagles have beaten both Dickson County and Kenwood, giving them the head-to-head advantage over either team if a tie develops after the final week.

Northwest, at 2-7 overall and 0-4 in region play, has been eliminated.

For Dickson County, a victory at Kenwood would mean entering the playoffs as the region’s No. 4 seed and traveling to the Region 8-5A champion for the opening round.

First, though, comes a game with all the urgency of the postseason itself.

After nine games, the Cougars still have the chance to extend their season. To do it, they must leave Kenwood with a win.
