One Win Away: Cougars Enter Final Game With Playoff Berth on the Line
The Dickson County Cougars have one more chance to keep their football season alive, and the assignment is simple: beat Kenwood.
Dickson County travels to face the Knights in Week 11 with the final playoff berth in Region 7-5A on the line. Both teams enter the regular-season finale at 3-6 overall and 1-3 in region play.
The winner claims fourth place and advances to the Class 5A playoffs. The loser packs up for the season.
For the Cougars, there are no complicated scenarios or other scores to follow. Their postseason hopes rest entirely on what happens at Kenwood.
Dickson County enters after a 22-0 loss to Northeast on Oct. 23, its fourth consecutive defeat. The Cougars last won Sept. 18, when they beat Northwest 32-7.
Despite that difficult stretch, a playoff opportunity remains within reach. A victory would give Dickson County a 4-6 overall record and a 2-3 region finish, enough to extend its season into November.
Kenwood faces the same opportunity after falling to Henry County 55-13 last week. Like Dickson County, the Knights earned their lone region victory against Northwest.
The latest available MaxPreps rankings give the Cougars reason for optimism.
In rankings dated Oct. 22, Dickson County stood 27th among Tennessee Class 5A teams, while Kenwood ranked 36th. The Cougars held a power rating of 36.6, compared with 26.4 for the Knights, and had the higher schedule-strength figure.
Those rankings do not include the Oct. 23 games, but they suggest Dickson County enters the matchup with an advantage despite the teams’ identical records.
Results against common region opponents offer another point of comparison.
Dickson County lost to Henry County 21-7, while Kenwood fell to the Patriots 55-13. Against Northeast, the Cougars lost 22-0, while the Knights were beaten 42-6.
Those results support the case for Dickson County, but the Cougars still must turn that advantage into a victory on the road. After being shut out against Northeast, getting the offense moving again will be central to their chances.
Kenwood, meanwhile, has every reason to approach the finale with the same urgency. The Knights can put their own difficult season behind them with a win that sends them to the postseason.
Elsewhere in Region 7-5A, the championship will be decided when Henry County visits Kirkwood.
Both teams enter unbeaten in region play at 4-0. Kirkwood is 8-1 overall after beating Northwest 56-0, while Henry County improved to 5-4 with its victory over Kenwood.
The winner takes the region championship and No. 1 seed. The loser finishes second. Both teams have secured first-round home playoff games.
MaxPreps gives Kirkwood the edge in that matchup, ranking the Cobras 10th in Class 5A and Henry County 18th. However, the Patriots have the stronger schedule-strength rating, making their overall record less revealing than it might first appear.
Northeast closes at Northwest with third place already secured. The Eagles improved to 4-5 overall and 2-2 in the region by beating Dickson County. Their victories over both the Cougars and Kenwood guarantee they will remain ahead of either team if they finish tied.
Northwest, at 2-7 overall and 0-4 in region play, has been eliminated. Northeast ranks 25th in the available Class 5A rankings, while Northwest is 42nd.
For Dickson County, however, the rest of the region’s business is secondary.
A win at Kenwood would send the Cougars into the playoffs as the No. 4 seed, with a first-round trip to the Region 8-5A champion.
After nine games, that opportunity is still there. Now the Cougars have to earn it.
