Joan Rial Retires After Nine Years Leading Dickson Senior Center

DICKSON, Tenn. — After nine years of helping transform the Dickson Senior Activity Center into one of the city’s busiest community programs, longtime director Joan Rial is retiring.

Rial was recognized by the Dickson City Council during its Aug. 3 meeting ahead of her retirement, which became effective Aug. 13.

City leaders credited Rial with overseeing a period of significant growth at the Senior Center, including expanded programming, increased participation and the center’s eventual move into a much larger facility.

Mayor Don Weiss recalled that Rial’s career with the city began with a personal recruitment effort nearly a decade ago.

At the time, Weiss said, his mother was at Dickson Health and Rehab, where Rial was working. He had seen firsthand the way Rial interacted with residents and believed she had the right personality and compassion to lead the city's programs for senior citizens.

After the retirement of previous director Betty Williams, Weiss approached Rial about coming to work for the city.

“I think I have a job that you might like,” Weiss recalled telling her.

The decision would ultimately have a significant impact on the Senior Center.

Weiss said Rial took the program “to a different level” from the beginning.

One of the clearest signs of that growth has been the Senior Center's move into a facility that Weiss estimated is approximately three times the size of the building Rial inherited when she became director.

The number of people participating in Senior Center activities has grown along with the facility.

Weiss told council members that the center is now averaging approximately 250 to 275 people per day.

He also praised the programs Rial brought to the center and said he believes Dickson's facility compares favorably with senior centers anywhere in Tennessee.

“I don't think there's probably a better senior center in the state of Tennessee,” Weiss said.

During the meeting, Rial was presented with a certificate of appreciation recognizing her nine years of service.

The certificate thanked Rial for her “outstanding leadership, dedication and service” to the City of Dickson Senior Activity Center and credited her vision, integrity and commitment to excellence with shaping the department and influencing those who worked alongside her.

Council members and those attending the meeting applauded Rial as she received the recognition.

Her retirement also brings a leadership transition to the Senior Center.

Weiss announced that there would be an acting director beginning Aug. 14.

Many years ago Joan Rial arrived at a smaller Senior Center, she now leaves behind a program serving hundreds of people on a typical day in a substantially larger facility.

City leaders said that growth represents Rial's lasting contribution to Dickson's senior community.

“We do appreciate what Joan's done,” Weiss said. “She's done a great job there. I know she's going to be missed by many there.”
