Dickson City Council Advances Annual Budget Toward Final Approval
Dickson, TN — The Dickson City Council took the first formal step toward adopting the city's fiscal year 2026-27 budget Monday night, approving the proposed spending plan on first reading during its June 1, 2026 meeting.
The budget ordinance, identified as Ordinance 1583, establishes funding for city departments and sets the property tax rate for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2026, and ending June 30, 2027.
The Finance Director told council members that no changes had been made to the budget proposal since it was presented to the Finance and Management Committee in May.
"This is still as we presented back at May finance," he said. "We haven't made any changes."
Following brief discussion and with no questions from council members, the budget ordinance was approved unanimously on first reading.
The budget now advances to a public hearing and second and final reading scheduled for June 15. The special session will take place immediately following the Finance and Management Committee meeting at City Hall.
State law requires municipalities to approve annual budgets before the start of the new fiscal year on July 1. The budget serves as the city's financial blueprint, outlining anticipated revenues and expenditures for public safety, public works, parks and recreation, administration, and other municipal services.
While specific budget details were not discussed during Monday's meeting, the spending plan has been under review by city officials for several weeks as they prepare for the upcoming fiscal year.
The June 15, 2026 public hearing will provide residents an opportunity to comment on the proposed budget before council members take their final vote. In addition to establishing spending levels for city departments, the ordinance will set the city's property tax rate for the coming year.
The budget vote comes as the city continues work on several major initiatives, including improvements at Buckner Park, transportation infrastructure upgrades, and economic development efforts aimed at supporting continued growth in Dickson.
If approved on second reading, the budget will take effect July 1 at the start of the new fiscal year.
Residents wishing to review the proposed budget or provide comments will have the opportunity to do so during the June 15 public hearing before the council considers final adoption.
