Armed Forces Event Proposed for Dickson County High School
Early discussions include military equipment displays, student simulators and a possible flyover, with April 2027 being considered to recognize a local National Guard unit’s anniversary.
Charlotte, TN — Dickson County High School could host an Armed Forces event featuring military equipment, interactive student activities and a possible flyover under preliminary plans discussed during the county commission’s October 5 work session.
A commissioner announced that planning is underway with the Tennessee Army National Guard and school representatives. Organizers hope to hold the event during the spring semester of 2027, although 2028 was mentioned as a possibility if more time is needed.
April 2027 is under consideration because it would provide an opportunity to recognize the local 267th Military Police unit’s 20th anniversary in Dickson County, according to the presentation.
No date has been set, and the participating organizations, equipment and activities remain tentative.
The proposed gathering would bring students from multiple school districts together for an opportunity to see military equipment and explore interactive exhibits. Organizers are looking at using the high school’s football facilities as part of the event.
Among the possibilities are large military exhibit vehicles containing simulators that would allow students to try activities such as simulated helicopter or drone flight.
The commissioner said the idea draws on a similar event held for years at the Milan Arsenal in West Tennessee. A National Guard lieutenant colonel involved in those events is helping with the discussions about bringing that type of experience to Dickson County.
The event would give the armed services an opportunity to showcase their equipment while allowing the school to welcome students and visitors to its facilities.
A military flyover is also being explored. During the announcement, the commissioner said conversations with U.S. Rep. Matt Van Epps had raised the possibility of arranging aircraft for a ceremony.
That portion of the proposal remains an option under discussion, rather than a confirmed part of the program.
The potential April timing could connect the event to recognition of the 267th Military Police unit’s two decades in the county. Organizers have not settled on a ceremony or determined how the anniversary would be incorporated.
School representative Christy Sutherland was identified as one of the people involved in coordinating the early planning with the National Guard.
The commissioner also explained that residents may see National Guard personnel at Dickson County High School as organizers assess the site and discuss arrangements. Those visits would be related to planning the proposed event.
The announcement was an update on preliminary discussions. Commissioners were not asked to approve funding or take a vote on the event during the work session.
More information is expected as organizers coordinate with the school and military representatives. A confirmed date, participating groups and final activities would be announced as those arrangements are developed.
